Are you worth more dead or alive? That’s a question many people ask, especially when reviewing life insurance policies.
I recently had a term life insurance policy expire. I bought it a few decades ago, and it was very inexpensive. I just bought another one last week. It’s not so cheap this time. I get it. I’m much older. I’m less healthy. And, let’s be honest, I am going to die sooner. The insurance company makes plenty on most of the young folks so it can make up its losses on us older ones. It’s simple math.
Meanwhile, many people don’t have any life insurance. These are the same folks who don’t worry about their funeral expenses. They will be dead, they reason, and it won’t be their problem. That’s true, but it is a problem for those who are left behind to clean up their messes.
I had a good friend who was married with two young children die nearly 20 years ago. We all worried about his family, but he planned properly with life insurance, so that was one less thing they had to fret about. It makes a person think, and it should.
As part of this new life insurance policy approval process, I had to have a physical exam. Height. Weight. Urine test. Blood work. And 93 medical history questions. You know the drill.
My height has decreased. My weight has increased. My blood and urine are, well, blood and urine, but they seem to mix together some now due to my not-so-friendly kidney stones. And those medical history questions aren’t as easy to answer as they used to be.
I have been proud to say that I don’t take any medications. My wife says that’s silly. Soon, it will likely be irrelevant as my cholesterol levels rise. The frustrating part is how these levels and others change so much from one physical to another. After one exam, the doctor wants to put me on a pill for the rest of my life. The next exam, I am told how my counts look exceptional. I would like to say that I changed my diet and exercise, but I didn’t.
When having my most recent exam, I asked the nurse about this. She explained how some of the tests can be impacted, positively or negatively, by what a person eats in the prior 24 hours.
So, in cases like these, I guess we really are what we eat. And depending on whether this insurance policy is approved or not, I may be worth more dead than alive.

The splendid Wilson Orchard of Iowa City, where James Beard semifinalist Matt Steigerwald runs the kitchen, announced plans to open a facility southwest of Des Moines, near Cumming. Iowa cider houses rank with those anywhere and Wilson is one of the two best.
Smithsonian has a story by Herriot Lee-Merrion in its October-November issue that tells an amazing tale of Choctaw generosity and Irish gratitude. In 1847, the Choctaw, fresh off the Trail of Tears and complete dispossession of their native lands, heard about Irish suffering during the potato famine. The impoverished Indians took up a collection and sent it to help the Irish. Last year, Irish donors led by U2 drummer Larry Mullen took up a collection to send $2 million to Native Americans for COVID relief, on behalf of their ancestors. It seems the Irish do not forget everything except grudges after all. They never forget a kindness.

Under escort from the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, nine Black students enter all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas on September 25, 1957. Three weeks earlier, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus had surrounded the school with National Guard troops to prevent its federal court-ordered racial integration. After a tense standoff, President Dwight D. Eisenhower federalized the Arkansas National Guard and sent 1,000 army paratroopers to Little Rock to enforce the court order. Read more.
