Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I thoroughly enjoyed your post in my inbox today (1954 Webster’s New American, Sept. 13, 2023). Like you, I have an old soul and wasn’t a glimmer in my parents’ eyes in the 1950s. Heck, they weren’t even teenagers yet. I truly believe times were so much simpler and slower then, but, sadly, know the world will not ever get back to those days. People like you and I will just have to satisfy ourselves with stories from others who also enjoy the days of old. Take care and God bless.” - Robyn

We have to keep the memories alive, while we can still remember them. - Shane

“It thrills my heart that you find joy in the dictionary (1954 Webster’s New American, Sept. 13, 2023). I have purchased a very old dictionary and also a Scholastic Children's Dictionary. It's a joy to me to hold the books in my hands, turn pages and find words. Even if looking up words is for the purpose of exercising my brain! What a wonderful thing that your staff still uses pens and paper in an electronic age.” - Bonnie

Bonnie, may I suggest you print out this digital newsletter and read it? - Shane

“You are sounding like ‘Statler and Waldorf’ in this morning’s gambling column (Fantasy Sports, Sept. 14, 2023). Grumpy old man. I concur!” - James

If I am Statler, then you must be Waldorf! - Shane

“I have participated in various fantasy sports contests for close to 20 years — some for money, some just for bragging rights among my friends (Fantasy Sports, Sept. 14, 2023). What I have found to be the most beneficial aspect of fantasy sports is that instead of just watching my favorite sports team (KC Chiefs) and rooting for a win is that now I find some level of interest in all the games for that week. So for me, the gambling aspect of fantasy sports is more of a ‘skin in the game’ type of wager. Granted, I have never wagered more than $50 on an entire season of Fantasy Football, as I also work too hard for my money to gamble much. I revel in the opportunity to rub the weekly wins of my fantasy football team in the faces of my friends way more than the payday at the end of the season. And, yes, it does go both ways when I lose those games.” - Kris

I am glad you can manage it properly. Go Chiefs! - Shane

“May I remind you that most all and I do mean all of the people who entered the capital on Jan. 6 only were carrying cameras to take selfies (Mailbag, Sept. 15, 2023). No government has ever been overthrown with phones. Anyone who believes our Representative Republic can be overthrown with phones is deceiving themselves.” - Donna

“I can’t speak for those folks, as I have never had a desire to storm through a government building, with or without a camera or phone.” - Shane

“I enjoyed having pedicures until my toenails became too thick and ugly to continue (Pedicures, Sept. 18, 2023). I decided to have my toenails removed and have been the better and richer for it!” - Diane

That doesn’t sound better or richer at all. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

The world is not changing fast enough for WOKE activists. Two more plant-based meat companies have ceased operations. Hooray Foods and Nowadays, both based in San Francisco, shared plans to end production in separate social media posts this week. The problem? No demand for their products.

Munich's 18-day Oktoberfest launched this week with activists demanding that chickens be organic, and they are, at twice the price and customer resistance. They also demand that beer goes organic and the beer tents become 100% carbon neutral. Not yet.

Either/Or opened on Grand Avenue near 63rd Street with sports bar food that includes caviar, steak de Burgo, and crispy pork belly.
