“I have participated in various fantasy sports contests for close to 20 years — some for money, some just for bragging rights among my friends (Fantasy Sports, Sept. 14, 2023). What I have found to be the most beneficial aspect of fantasy sports is that instead of just watching my favorite sports team (KC Chiefs) and rooting for a win is that now I find some level of interest in all the games for that week. So for me, the gambling aspect of fantasy sports is more of a ‘skin in the game’ type of wager. Granted, I have never wagered more than $50 on an entire season of Fantasy Football, as I also work too hard for my money to gamble much. I revel in the opportunity to rub the weekly wins of my fantasy football team in the faces of my friends way more than the payday at the end of the season. And, yes, it does go both ways when I lose those games.” - Kris

“I enjoyed having pedicures until my toenails became too thick and ugly to continue (Pedicures, Sept. 18, 2023). I decided to have my toenails removed and have been the better and richer for it!” - Diane

The world is not changing fast enough for WOKE activists. Two more plant-based meat companies have ceased operations. Hooray Foods and Nowadays, both based in San Francisco, shared plans to end production in separate social media posts this week. The problem? No demand for their products.
Munich's 18-day Oktoberfest launched this week with activists demanding that chickens be organic, and they are, at twice the price and customer resistance. They also demand that beer goes organic and the beer tents become 100% carbon neutral. Not yet.

Home Tour Returns to River Bend Neighborhood, Des Moines
The River Bend Neighborhood Association will hold its 25th annual home tour on September 23 and 24th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour is an opportunity for the community to get a glimpse into some of the district's homes, farms, and businesses. Many of the houses in River Bend date back to the 1870s. The tour highlights homes in varying stages of renovation and restoration, several designed by prominent architects.
This year’s event features a self-guided tour of twelve homes, many of which are either new to the tour or have not participated in a number of years. Additionally, visitors can visit eight places of interest to learn more about exciting developments in the neighborhood.
The tour will also feature demonstrations at three of the properties.
Tickets are $15 dollars, and can be purchased the day of in the east parking lot of Moulton School at College and Seventh, Des Moines. Visitors are also welcome to park in any available location within the neighborhood. |
