I often receive questions about the events that we put on in coordination with our CITYVIEW magazine. What exactly are these “Summer Stir,” “Fire and Ice” and “Wine and Whiskey Walk” events? In short, they are wonderful opportunities to get out and experience some of the incredible food and drink establishments of central Iowa in the early-evening hours.
Many of you often hear about these places and say, “We should go there sometime.” We created these types of events so you can visit multiple places in one evening as a “sampling.” Many attendees tell us, “I have never been here before, but I am certainly coming back.” That is exactly what we want to hear and is precisely why we do these events.
You might be surprised by the average age of the attendees. Although we welcome people of all ages, these events tend to bring out those 40 or older who aren’t looking for dollar beers or dance floors. They simply want a relaxing evening out with some friends where they can try some signature drinks and enjoy the atmosphere of many popular establishments.
I am sometimes asked if people can attend without buying drink tickets. Absolutely. All these establishments are open for business to the public throughout the evening.
Sound like fun? Well, you are in luck, as we have our annual Wine and Whiskey Walk this Friday evening from 5-9 p.m. at West Glen Town Center. For a $25 advance ticket price ($35 at the door), participants receive 10 drink tickets, each good for a sample whiskey drink or wine at any of the following West Glen area establishments: Wellman’s Pub & Rooftop, The Irish, Shotgun Betty’s, Coach’s Pizza, Tonic, Anna Dolce Ristorante, The Breakfast Club and The Operating Room.
Check-in is at The Breakfast Club, 5525 Mills Civic Parkway, Suite 100. There is plenty of free parking at West Glen Town Center, and all the locations are within walking distance. The weather looks fantastic, too, with a high of 80, a low of 61 and no rain in the forecast.
If you are like me and are looking for a great meal while you are out, you should know that many of these participating establishments have incredible food menus, too. We hope that some of the retail establishments will be open for you to shop also.

Mongolia, with Japanese aid, is rebuilding its agriculture with compost, creating fertile fields in previous deserts, according to Newsroom Tokyo. Nomads are settling outside Ulaanbaatar near the capital's dumpsites and becoming farmers.
Cambodia's Phka Rumduol jasmine was proclaimed the best rice in the world at the Rice Traders World Rice Conference in Thailand. This was the fifth time in a dozen years that a Cambodian rice won the title. Saigon Times wrote that this is "a wake-up call for Vietnam and Thailand, the world's leading rice exporters." Cambodian agriculture rebuilt itself completely after the five-year genocide of the 1970s. They literally had exhausted all their seed stock. Japanese rice remains the most expensive and basmati the most popular.
Pho All Seasons (1311 E. Euclid Ave., Des Moines) has a complex menu of rice specialties, 13 in all, with lobster, quail, short ribs, calamari and more familiar proteins featured. Note they close at 3 p.m. Monday-Thursday but are open till 9 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Pho 515 (809 University Ave., Des Moines) offers rice dishes that feature Peking duck and filet mignon, plus a Cambodian rice noodle dish that includes roast pork, shrimp, pork heart and quail egg. Note they are closed Thursdays.

Helping solve problems with — not for — students, families and staff

After graduating from East Waterloo High School, Daryl Dotson attended Upper Iowa University where he earned a degree in marketing and participated in football and wrestling. He has since attended Drake University, where he earned a master’s degree in teaching; the University of Northern Iowa, where he participated in the Principalship Program; and Northwest Missouri State, where he obtained a Superintendent Licensure. Dotson previously worked for the Des Moines Public Schools for 17 years before joining the Bondurant-Farrar Community School District. Today, he serves as the Student Success Advocate for the Bondurant-Farrar High School.
“Working with students at the high school level is what I love about my job,” Dotson says. “I enjoy the fact that, in my role, I get to know students on a personal level and develop a relationship with them.”
Dotson says tevery day looks different in his role. He is learning that he must be organized in order to maximize the day. On most days, he checks in with a list of students, meets with teachers about students when necessary, is part of a team that has a shared responsibility in student achievement, and more.
