Good Thursday Morning to You!

Welcome to another edition of the Friday mailbag a day early. We have so many great letters, and I can’t fit them all in on Friday. Below you will find some sent recently by subscribers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity. Look for more tomorrow.

“Shane, I thought your Tuesday morning column (Invested in wrestling, March 7, 2023) was great. I am forwarding it to a close friend who is a dedicated assistant wrestling coach and lifelong wrestling participant/enthusiast. The perspective is exactly what youth sports needs to hear for not just wrestling, but all team activities.” - Loren

I continue to learn that most everything in life is a circle, and if I really appreciate something, I need to make sure the circle is never broken. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I always enjoy your column. I am a woman of very strong faith. I thank you so much for being bold and writing what needs to be said. I loved the wrestling column and congrats on your award (Invested in wrestling, March 7, 2023). You are most deserving. I appreciate this statement more than you know: ‘Loyalty can be defined in many ways, but, maybe most importantly, it means realizing that what is happening right now isn’t all about you and that sacrifices have to be made personally for the betterment of others.’ It's a fantastic life lesson for all of us, and especially for me today. Thank you so much, Shane. Keep the faith!” - Rose

I understand that the sport of wrestling is challenging for most people to understand, but the lessons I learned from it can apply to most everyone, and I will preach them to anyone who will listen. I am glad my message connected with you, Rose. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. As a longtime aficionado of rock n' roll, I thought I would add someone who I think is the best drummer of all time… and he was not associated with rock music (G.O.A.T, March 8, 2023). Buddy Rich was on ‘The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson’ numerous times and always received standing ovations after his performances. He was absolutely jaw-dropping to watch, no matter what a person's musical preference was. I never got to see him live, but I'm sure it would have been one of the highlights of my musical experiences.” - Jim

You inspired me to check out his videos on YouTube, and he is truly amazing. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. Great column (Keeping it clean, March 9, 2023). My vehicle gets a wash at least twice a week — 104 seems like a good number.” - Matt

You are my kind of guy. - Shane

“I had no idea Grimes was the center of the car wash universe (Keeping it clean, March 9, 2023). I need to drive past Ryko and pay homage. I do like to keep my pickup clean. Regarding the 34 gallons per wash (and the real reason for checking in), the car wash I worked at in the 1970s recycled all its water, so there wasn’t much going into the sewer system. I remember digging out the pit whenever the wash was closed due to rain, snow, etc. The pit collects the dirt off the cars, so it doesn’t go into the sewer system. And this was nearly 50 years ago. I suspect the technology these days is even more environmentally friendly. Keep up the fine reporting!” - Steve

I cleaned out underground pits, too — beneath hog confinement buildings. It wasn’t pleasant. Just thinking about it makes me think I need another car wash. - Shane

“I have the monthly membership (Keeping it clean, March 9, 2023). I go so much that I try to get my cost down to $1.50 per car wash.” - Steve

The more you use it, the cost per wash should be free at some point, right? - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Hemp is the new alfalfa. Hemp regenerates the soil and requires less water than traditional crops, which makes it a sustainable option for crop rotation, according to the company Planet Based Foods. Expo West, one of the world's largest food trade shows, showcased hemp-based products. Planet Based Foods introduced its most recent innovation: hemp-based vegan ice cream.

Interestingly, the failure of SVB last week was partly blamed on the bank pushing super-green agendas, like hemp and kelp products, on companies rather than looking for higher probability of profit. Does the California banking system now depend on consumer acceptance of vegan hemp ice cream and kelp puffed chips?

A Chicago diner sued Buffalo Wild Wings last week for selling "boneless chicken wings" that included no wing meat at all, just breasts that are cheaper. The company responded "It’s true. Our boneless wings are all white meat chicken. Our hamburgers contain no ham. Our buffalo wings are 0% buffalo." That response took a beating on social media.

Your Clear Mortgage forecast from Jason Parkin

Happy Thursday! Rain moves in this morning, changing to snow in the late afternoon and into early evening. Right now it’s looking like a dusting for the Des Moines area. It’ll be windy Friday and Saturday, and we’ll finally see winds dying down Sunday. The next rain chance comes next Thursday, which seems to be the day we get precipitation lately.

1985: In Beirut, Lebanon, Islamic militants kidnap American journalist Terry Anderson and take him to the southern suburbs of the war-torn city, where other Western hostages are being held in scattered dungeons under ruined buildings. When work and personal intertwine

Kortni Remer was raised in the family business. Her parents, Kurt and Mari Stocker, started Broken Arrow T-Shirt Printing in 1989, just three years after she was born. Now, she is taking it over.

If you're from the metro, you might remember the Broken Arrow bar that opened on the square in Polk City in 1974. When the bar closed down years later, the couple decided to purchase the building so they could do something really great with it. That turned out to be imprinting one custom T-shirt at a time.

A printing shop had closed down, and the Stockers purchased its equipment and hired its staff. When they started in Polk City, Mari decided to keep the Broken Arrow name because it was such a well-known landmark.
