“I used to see a 93-year-old man, wearing an AC/DC concert T-shirt, working out nearly every day at the gym (The age you stop feeling young, Aug. 29, 2023). Some days, he made me feel young; other days, he made me feel old. Every day, he inspired me.” - Mike

“I have to tell you about an experience I had this week that really touched me (The age you stop feeling young, Aug. 29, 2023). I was at the local grocery store to get my propane tank exchanged. I was waiting next to the propane tanks, and four young boys out for a ride on bicycles stopped and asked, ‘How are you today, sir?’ At first, I was shocked that they would stop to talk to a senior citizen but soon realized they were genuine. Three of the boys had bikes but the fourth had what I think was an electric scooter. I'm not sure as he had a five-gallon bucket for a seat. We had a nice visit about what they were doing and when school was starting, etc. They were very pleasant and a joy to visit with. I've told many friends about our encounter and how it impacted me. After they left, I thought about how much society has changed from when I was their age. Kudos to those boys who made my day… and their parents, too.” - Frank
A five-gallon bucket for a seat? An empty propane tank might be more comfortable to sit on. Either way, they sound like nice kids, and you probably made their day. - Shane

"Split brain spending" is now an American thing. Theory is consumers want cheap deals on things like air fares but will pay dearly for amenities, like good booze on board. Allegiant Air, the Las Vegas-based carrier with fares that can dip under $40, added Johnnie Walker Blue Label for $35 a shot on flights this summer. The liquor goes for $300 a liter at airport duty-free shops and can top $80 a shot in restaurants and nightclubs. No other U.S. airline sells it on their flights. Spirit and Frontier also added high end booze to their low fare airline menus.
Earlier this week we wrote that Bud Light had lost its title as top selling beer to Corona. Alert reader Rex Post reminded us that it's Modelo Especial that now leads. Snoop Dog's Corona commercials are just so cool we got confused.
Football is back! Sully's (860 First St., West Des Moines) and Front Row (9956 Swanson Blvd., Clive) have all day Happy Hours on Sundays.

Volunteers needed to read with kids

Reading for a half hour a week to an elementary student might seem brief; however, those minutes are impactful for a child.
The Everybody Wins! Iowa and its Power Read program has paired mentors or “reading buddies” with students for the past 20 years.
Last year, 415 students with 412 mentors put in 5,279 volunteer hours. The reading takes place at 28 Des Moines-area school sites, including West Des Moines schools, Crestview School of Inquiry, Crossroads Park and Hillside.
Executive Director Karen Ligas says that reading with kids is important.
