“Another great piece of nostalgic trivia (Coin pouches, Aug. 8, 2023)! I haven’t seen a coin pouch in years and haven’t used one for more years than that. For many years, at the end of the day, all the coins in my pocket go into a large coffee mug on the dresser. When the cup begins to overflow, I take the contents to a bank or someplace to convert to dollar bills and donate the money to charity. Actually two cups — one for pennies and one for nickels and dimes. Quarters go into a used pill bottle, and those are kept in the car console for parking meters or an occasional coin-operated washing machine when traveling. Now that parking meters are going digital, I will probably redirect that money to charity as well. After 12 years of retirement, it seems we don’t accumulate that much in coins because we aren’t stopping at the convenience store every day for snacks and beverages!” - Chuck |

I had a friend in high school who kept two dimes in her penny loafers in case she needed to make a phone call. I thought it was a great idea. Useless today, of course. - Shane

Des Moines Performing Arts takes this free show to the community
Since 1995, Bindlestiff Family Cirkus has traveled the world, bringing a unique hybrid of vaudeville, circus and sideshow spectacle to theaters, clubs, colleges and festivals. The Cirkus harkens back to the heyday of the traditional American Circus touring the country by caravan, while offering its own artistic twist. It’s earthy, gritty and celebrates the sideshow’s odd novelty acts in an engaging and participatory way that you don’t find in other types of circus. There will be eight opportunities for people to see this free, family-friendly performance in the Des Moines metro:

BBC is reporting that England is having a bumper grape crop this year. Much of Champagne's grapes are being replanted in England now as warmer temperatures make the grapes of sparkling wine search for cooler ground.
Ruth's Chris Steakhouse gave $14,171 to Meals from the Heartland to commemorate their Grand Opening at Jordan Creek and Ashworth Monday. The glamorous 15,000 square foot restaurant has more than a dozen chandeliers each of which cost as much as Ruth Fertel borrowed to open her first restaurant in New Orleans in 1965.
Thursday is goulash day at the Dam Pub (2710 Beaver Ave.). They also sell beer for $2 a can on Thursdays.

Coaching is about much more than teaching the fundamentals of a sport. It is about developing the heart and mind of an athlete. It is about encouraging, leading and building relationships. It’s about more than a winning season. It’s about developing the mindset of a winner — not only in competition but in life’s endeavors. Great coaches do that — and more, as the athletes whose lives they touched can attest.
On the run
Samantha Strauss started running in elementary school when she joined the Johnston Running Club. She was more interested in playing softball and volleyball growing up, but she decided it felt natural to join the middle school track team in eighth grade. After having some success during freshman year of track and deciding not to continue playing volleyball, she also joined the cross country team her sophomore year.
Her dad has run 13 marathons and been a big running inspiration for her. However, Strauss was reluctant to join cross country at the time because she thought distance running sounded terrible.
