“Good morning, Shane. The beginning of your story brought back memories (The locker, July 31, 2023). When I introduced my wife to New Jersey, she fell in love with ‘Packards’ Italian sausage. We would fill a cooler with ice and parboiled meat for our trip home. One day I was in a Dahl’s grocery store on the south side of Des Moines and chatting with a very Italian lady and asked her about good Italian sausage here in Des Moines. A young man standing nearby beat her with the Graziano Brothers answer. Packards was torn down before long and replaced by a Target. She still has not found a comparable tuna salad sandwich (only transported freshly made by plane) from the neighborhood Hackensack deli. Thanks for great reading.” - John

“Shane, I couldn’t help but notice your out-of-touch, behind-the-scene comment this morning (Twitter, Aug. 7, 2023)! You think you’re clever because you get to make your point without most of your readers having any clue what you’re doing. In my opinion, that’s cowardice and even slimy. I don’t like that you threw The Chicks and Lady A in with your list of nonsense name changers. As I’m sure you are well aware, The Chicks changed their name because they didn’t want their name associated with American slavery. Which I HOPE you could agree was the right thing to do in this day and age. Lady A changed their name for the exact same reason. Two thumbs down.” - Andreah Moyer-Stevens. (Yep, it’s hyphenated. I bet you have an opinion on that. I’ve heard it before.)
Everyone has the right to change a name. Some will agree with it. Some will think it’s silly. But cowardice and slimy? Now that’s nonsense. Have a wonderful day. – Shane

I am so glad to have been born and raised in the Midwest and know the beauty and excitement of silent falling snow, lightning bugs, squirrels, and lush green grass and trees. The world food crisis may have found a savior. Field pennycress, a plant in the Brassica family related to mustards and cabbages, is being cultivated and cross bred to turn its high oil content, about 50% higher than that of a soybean, into diesel and aviation fuel. That would free corn and beans for food use and reduce their price.
Stand-alone bakery sales topped $7.7 billion in 2022, compared with $6.1 billion in 2018, according to data from Sundale Research. The Wall Street Journal has introduced "The Croissant Theory" which says bakeries must sell out, or stop making items, because food waste can not be tolerated in an era of ingredient inflation, labor shortages and heavy competition from fast food.

Bowman stresses education and preparation for snowmobilers.

Todd Bowman’s garage in rural Altoona contains a lot of things you wouldn’t expect to find in Iowa. He has racing snowmobiles, mountain snowmobiles and avalanche safety equipment. But that’s because, as Bowman says, “I spend three months out of the winter in Colorado. There’s a few of us from Des Moines that rent a house out there.”
His passion for fun in the snow began when he was young.
“I’ve been riding snowmobiles since I was a kid, and I got into racing snowmobiles probably 15 years ago,” he says. “And I’ve been back into mountain riding since 2008. I got involved in avalanche awareness and safety probably around 2014.”
Avalanche safety is a deeply personal issue to Bowman, since a good friend died in an avalanche several years ago, he says. Plus, he has emergency response experience.
