This iconic sculpture was first created in 1911 and has been a mainstay at the Iowa State Fair almost every year since. If you are an Iowan, you probably know more about the butter cow than you want to admit. If you are not from Iowa, you probably wonder what in the world a butter cow is. Only 17 African leaders showed up last week at Vlad Putin's Russia-Africa Summit. 43 showed up last time. All expressed displeasure at his canceling the Black Sea Accord, which canceled grain exports to Africa. Meanwhile grain prices rose quickly, across the board, worldwide. And 200,000 Russian draft dodgers have driven rents double in Batumi, just one of many places in Georgia where unhappy Russians are fleeing to.

Tuesday is bargain day in Des Moines with fabulous taco deals at top taquerias like La Familia (1610 Sixth Ave.), Malo (900 Mulberry St.) and Baja Cocina (1936 E. Sixth St.). That latter Mexican magic is next door to Grateful Chef where the best summer soups (aka cold) are available now. Her cucumber soup is addictive.

Meet Jade Fox
Music provides students opportunity to shine.

By T.K. West

Jade Fox has been involved with music in some sort of capacity her entire life. At a young age, she began singing in a children’s church choir directed by her grandmother and has been involved in music since. While at Nodaway Valley High School, Fox was involved in a variety of musical activities such as show choir, choir, band, musicals and more.

She studied music education at Simpson College and received a master’s degree in music education from the University of Northern Iowa. Today, Fox teaches K-5 General Music at Webster Elementary School.

She will be starting her 15th year with the Urbandale Community School District this fall.

“What I love best about teaching elementary music is that I get to guide my students on a journey to find a love and joy of music within themselves,” Fox says.
