| | The small print
It’s official. In just two months, our total digital subscriber count for this Times Vedette newsletter has surpassed the total number of subscribers we had previously to the print edition —and that doesn’t even include our 3,181 online users and 10,292 page views at www.gctimesnews.com, or our 1,107 Facebook followers. I suspected this growth would happen, but it did so much faster than I thought it would. The pathway to growth has had a few bumps, but we keep plowing ahead.
That’s good news for advertisers, who are now reaching more people for their marketing dollar. That’s good news for readers, who are now receiving this twice per week, providing more timely and accessible news. And that’s good news for us, as we continue to work at more modern and efficient ways to provide news and information to the people of Guthrie County.
Change isn’t easy, as most all of you know. When I floated this idea to people six months ago, I was told it would never work. I was asked why I would give up that subscriber money. I was ridiculed by traditional publishers in the industry for forfeiting the legal revenue from the government entities they cling to for survival.
Much of this change stems from my strong feelings that the paid publishing subscription model is outdated and broken, but there is another important and underlying reason: I don’t feel your tax dollars (or mine) should be used to fund the operations of traditional weekly newspapers. Some of you fully understand what I am referencing. Most of you don’t. Please allow me to explain.
If you ever wondered why paid subscription newspapers run the minutes and expenditures and other items from the board of supervisors, the city councils and the school boards in the small type in their back pages, the answer is simple — they get paid to do so. And thanks to the ongoing lobbying efforts of the Iowa Newspaper Association, paid subscription newspapers are the only options these government entities have. Many newspapers used to reach six or more households out of 10 in most every community they served, sometimes more. Today, most newspapers don’t reach two out of 10, some less than one out of 10. Meanwhile, your tax dollars are being used by government entities required to publish these public notices in paid subscription newspapers. Our free publications that reach every household don’t qualify. Neither does this digital email newsletter. Or internet postings. Or government websites. Or direct mailers. Or social media. Only paid subscription newspapers qualify. That’s it.
The absurdity of this has been discussed in most every Iowa legislative session in recent years, and some laws have been changed to no longer require smaller communities to publish all legal notices in newspapers. But the absurdity continues. And you continue to pay for it. My newspaper industry colleagues hate when I bring this up, but they know it’s true, and they are simply hanging on to the legal revenue for as long as they can, fully realizing that the end is near — as it should be.
Meanwhile, we will keep focusing on efforts to bring you the news and information you want in modern formats that reach a continually growing number of people. It is best for our advertisers. It is best for our readers. And, ultimately, it will be best for us, too. It’s what we do.

| | Guthrie County Supervisors approve 3.5% salary increase
Arber shares details on recent dog bite incidents.

During the regular meeting of the Guthrie County Board of Supervisors on March 12, the item generating the most discussion was a salary increase for county employees for the upcoming fiscal year. Supervisor Brian Johnson suggested an increase of 3.2%, saying he preferred to stay “conservative.” Mike Dickson pointed out that staying conservative eventually leads to salaries no longer being competitive.
After lengthy discussion, Supervisor Steve Smith proposed a compromise.

The Panora City Council meeting on March 11 began at the city’s water treatment plant. The city’s water plant supervisor, Brent Christofferson, led the council in a walk-through of the water plant as he explained plant operations and maintenance. He also shared data on the plant’s capacity and production numbers.
“We pumped 52 million gallons last year,” Christofferson said, although he added that the plant has the capability to pump much more if needed.

| | Guthrie Center City Council hears neighbor complaint

During the March 11 regular meeting of the Guthrie Center City Council, citizen Mitchell McNeil explained his concerns about possible violations of the city’s “junk ordinance” and other safety issues. McNeil lives on North Fourth Street.
“My main concern is all the junk that my neighbor has accumulated and not getting cleaned up… one of my main concerns is the extension cord that’s running from the house and powering one of the buildings out there, with a bungee cord through the tree, hanging it up there. That’s definitely a fire code (violation),” said McNeil.

| | Panorama Schools add 4 make-up days

The Panorama School Board met on March 11 in regular session. Following a public hearing on the issue, the master calendar was approved for the 2024-2025 school year.
The board amended the current school calendar, adding four additional school days to the end of the year to make up for days canceled due to weather. The days added are May 23, 24, 28 and 29.

Panora Fiber held its annual business meeting on March 11 at the Panora Community Center, starting at 6 p.m. This was the formal business meeting for the two corporations, Panora Communications Cooperative and Panora Cooperative Cablevision Association, Inc. Both companies are served by the same board of directors. Ron Reynolds serves as the board president of Panora Communications Cooperative and Dave Ryan serves as the board president of Panora Cooperative Cablevision Association, Inc.

The Guthrie County Youth Foundation is accepting applications for scholarships from the Class of 2024. Students who plan to further their education in two or three-year programs that are in vocational, technical or medical fields are urged to apply.
Last year, 15 scholarships of $300 were awarded to students in the class of 2023 from Adair-Casey / Guthrie Center, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Panorama and West Central Valley High Schools. Home school students are also eligible.

Guthrie County’s primary election will be held June 4. Filing for County Offices begins March 4 and the deadline to file is March 22 at 5 p.m. The following County Offices terms are up this year:
- Supervisor District 2 – Brian Johnson
- Supervisor District 5 – Mike Dickson
- County Auditor – Dani Fink
- County Sheriff – Marty Arganbright
Candidates for either Supervisor district must obtain at least 21 signatures from eligible electors in their respective districts. Candidates for Auditor or Sheriff must obtain at least 50 signatures from eligible electors in the county. | |

The Guthrie Center and Adair Lions Clubs after-prom committee is again organizing an After-Prom party for the ACGC High School. The After-Prom activities will take place on Saturday, April 18 at IncrediBowl Family Fun Center. At the event, students play games such as bowling, billiards, horse races, card games, darts, foosball and bingo.
Students also enjoy food and a lot of prizes.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m., at the assisted living rec room at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and at the Guthrie Center Activity Center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play.
On March 8, a total of 11 players participated. Right off the bat, Joanne Zieser raked in a 24 and another 16 later. Kay Phippen got a 16, and Jim Carico squawked out a 16 and a 20.

| | Chevy truck rolls over on Highway 141

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Kent Gries reported a single-vehicle accident occurring on March 8 at 8:05 a.m. Amelia Rose Eddy, 15, of Bayard was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup westbound on Highway 141 between Juniper Avenue and Horn Avenue. The vehicle went across a bridge, and the driver lost control and entered the north ditch and overturned. Eddy was wearing a shoulder and lap belt and was uninjured. The report stated that the collision was caused by an ice-covered bridge and that roads were otherwise only slick in spots. The report said the bridge was complete ice, and two vehicles spun out on the same bridge. No citations were issued. The vehicle was towed through private arrangements. Damage to the Chevrolet truck was estimated at $5,000. | |

Joan Ann Miller, 76, daughter of Folmer and Frances (Andersen) Walters, was born Feb. 28, 1948, in Carroll. She passed away Sunday, March 10, 2024, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, Des Moines.
Joan was baptized June 27, 1948, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Audubon. She attended rural school then when they moved into Audubon, attended high school there, graduating in 1966.
After graduating, she met her husband, Gary Lee Miller, and they were married Sept. 23, 1967, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Audubon.

The ACGC girls track and field team competed at the 2024 IATC Indoor Girls Championships for 1A in Ames on Friday, March 8. The team scored 6 points overall, which placed them 26th out of the 36 schools that scored points and the 47 that competed overall. Ava Campbell medaled for the Chargers, earning bronze for her effort in the 800-meter run.
ACGC placements:
- 4x100 meter relay: 57.58 for 20th
- 800 meter run: Ava Campbell finished third with a time of 2:25.77
- 4x400 meter relay: 4:42.70 for 19th
- 4x800 meter relay: 11:38.35 for 15th
- 800 medley relay: 2:11.27 for 21st

I knew nothing about this movie going in and have praised it ever since that day. It is nominated for Best International Film (formerly known as Best Foreign Film). It is in German with subtitles. By the way, contrary to public opinion, no one has ever been injured by a subtitle. The movie is about a teacher in a German school who discovers a co-worker is responsible for thefts in the teachers’ lounge. When she confronts her, you know what hits the fan. And, of course, the person denies the accusation, and it becomes a “she said/she said” battle with the accuser being the one who is persecuted. It is a powerful film and a powerful statement on the world we live in. One of the best films I saw last year. Grade: A | |
