The Guthrie Center-based donations warehouse that housed Greenfield tornado material donations closed on Aug. 6. Two Guthrie County Fair buildings were used for this space. This local tornado relief effort consisted of collecting early donations late May through June, and then sorting, boxing and putting them on pallets by category. Needed products were then trucked back to Greenfield donation distribution sites as requested.

Whiterock Conservancy, 1436 Highway 141 in Coon Rapids, is participating in the monarch watch tagging program and welcomes help in capturing monarch butterflies to tag.

On Aug. 24 from 10-11:30 a.m., participants can investigate the life cycle of a monarch butterfly, discover how to identify male and female monarchs, study monarch migration and learn how to tag monarchs on their journey south to central Mexico.

Seventh Day Adventist Church to celebrate 100 years on Aug. 17

The public is invited to help the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Guthrie Center celebrate its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Guthrie County Fairgrounds Event Center.

A gospel music concert by Pride Family Music will be held beginning at 2 p.m. Former pastor Steven Shafer will speak, and visits to the church (1305 North St. in Guthrie Center) will be available.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and Department of Natural Resources Director Kayla Lyon recognized 44 Iowa farm families with Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Awards at the 2024 Iowa State Fair, including Tamara Deal and Mark and Brennen Vogel. The award acknowledges farmers who take voluntary actions to improve and protect our state’s natural resources, including our soil and water, serving as leaders within their communities.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson honored 439 Iowa farm families with Century or Heritage Farm designations at the 2024 Iowa State Fair. The program celebrates farms that have been owned by the same families for 100 and 150 years, respectively.

Cribbage results from Aug. 14

On Aug. 14, a total of 12 players participated. Wayne Nickel, Sandy Rumelhart and Rhonda Titus each got a 16. Dave Kading had an 18, and Dick Elis did the same. Jane Barcus got a 16 and a 20, and Lela Schwartz played a 16 and a 24.

The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m., at the New Homestead independent living rec room at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and at the Guthrie Center Activity Center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday.

Truck rollover accident on Highway 44 Aug. 14

Guthrie County Deputy Sheriff Todd Thorn reported a single-vehicle accident occurring on Aug. 14 at 2:15 p.m. on Highway 44. Kolby William Fogarty, 19, of Madrid was driving a 2008 Nissan Titan truck westbound on Highway 44 and swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway, losing control of the vehicle. The truck entered into the north ditch and rolled, coming to rest on its wheels. Damage to the truck is estimated at $15,000. Fogarty was issued citations for failure to maintain control and O.W.I. first offense.

Panorama senior outfielder and future Iowa Hawkeye Jaidyn Sellers was named to the West Central Activities Conference First Team as an outfielder. Sellers had 10 home runs, 15 RBIs and was walked 28 times this season. Her batting average was .476, the highest on Panorama’s squad. Sellers also led the team in stolen bases, with 28 in 28 attempts. Lindy Nelson was named to the honorable mention list, playing third base and catcher last season for Panorama. Nelson led Panorama in RBIs with 27 and doubles with 12. She also hit one home run, with her batting average finishing at .312.

ACGC’s Emerson Van Meter was named to the West Central Activities Conference First team for her performances in the 2023-2024 season. The senior pitcher finished the season with 102 strikeouts and a 2.68 ERA in her 21 games on the mound. She kept opponents’ batting average to .245. On offense, Van Meter batted .282 with 12 RBIs.
Teammates joining Van Meter are senior outfielder Jenna Rowley and utility senior Reagan Carney on the second team. Rowley hit one homerun and added 11 RBIs, batting .338. Her 39 total bases were second-best on the team. Carney led all ACGC players in RBIs with 25.

Panorama Women’s Golf League results from Aug. 13

A total of 46 women played in the Panorama Women’s Golf League on Aug. 13.

In the A group, Deb Rockwell and Emily Spradling were the low scratch winners with a 33. The second low scratch winner was Sharon Wedemeyer with a 34. Sharon Wedemeyer was the HDCP winner with a 21. Sharon Wedemeyer had the fewest putts with 14.

In the B group, Lynn Breitback was the low scratch winner with a 39. The second low scratch winner was Pam Shelton with a 42.

Hansen has low score Aug. 13 in Panorama West Tuesday Men’s Golf League

On Aug. 13 at Panorama West Golf Course, 33 men played during Tuesday evening league. Chip Hansen had a low score of 30. John Muenzenberger was closest to the pin. John Harre made the longest putt. Mike Arneson needed only 14 putts. The scramble was won by the team of Chip Hansen, Bill Eby and John Peters with a score of 3 under par 24.

Next week will be the last week of regular play. Aug. 27 will be the shoot-out. The league tournament and awards banquet will be Sept. 3.

Congregate Meals are served at Sneakers Café, Monday through Friday, in the Guthrie County Hospital. No meals are available on major holidays or during inclement weather. This service is available for seniors ages 60 and older. No reservation is needed. All menus follow Elderbridge-approved menus and provide at least one-third of the nutritional needs of individuals 60 and older. Menus are subject to change. If you go to the Guthrie County Veterinary Clinic and ask for Dr. Frels, you’ll need to be more specific. All four of the veterinarians at the clinic are related. Dr. Doug Frels and his wife, Dr. Donna Paglialunga, started the clinic, and have since been joined by their son, Dr. William Frels and his wife, Dr. Abby Frels.

William recently took time to explain his path in becoming a veterinarian in Guthrie Center. Growing up with parents who are both veterinarians, William was around the practice and the animals, but he doesn’t remember a specific moment when he decided to follow in his parents’ career footsteps.
