| | Age is just a number
“Age is just a number. How you take care of your body determines your true age.”
That was something Lemar Koethe, the founder of 7 Flags Fitness Center, the former health club on 100th Street in Clive, told me in the 1990s. I tried at the time to get Lemar to run an advertisement for his health club with his photo and this quote as the headline, as he was proud of how fit he was for his age. He said I was trying to play up to him. He was right. But it was a great quote, and it would have been a great ad.
But is age just a number? Not according to many programs that seem guilty of age discrimination. Senior citizen discounts are one. Kids-eat-free campaigns are another. So are any other programs that offer special pricing for people based solely on their age.
Many of our laws also appear to discriminate based on age. Is it OK to require a person to be a minimum age to be able to do something, but not require the same person to quit doing that activity at a later age?
Here in Iowa, we have to be 16 to obtain a driver’s license, but there is no age when we are required to permanently park the Pontiac. We have to be 18 to access our right to vote, but we can vote for Donald Trump or Kamala Harris at any age. We have to be 21 to legally purchase alcohol, but we can keep buying pints of Smirnoff well into our 90s. You may appropriately argue that many older people are still capable of participating in all of these activities. Agreed. But aren't many people who are younger than the minimum ages capable, too? And if these laws don’t discriminate based on age, then what does?
You can use science to support this argument, to some degree. Numerous studies show that the human brain does not fully develop until age 25. If that is so, using the current logic, then why do our laws allow anyone younger than 25 to drive, vote or buy alcohol? Numerous studies also show that cognitive decline most often occurs at age 70 or older. If that is true, using the same current logic, why should anyone older than 70 be able to drive, vote or buy alcohol?
I am being silly, of course, but our age-restrictive laws and offers are debatable, to say the least. Meanwhile, don’t expect any changes soon, as only one thing can be certain. At the end of the day, Lemar was right. Age is just a number.

• Mutton Busting and Grand River Rodeo in the grandstand this evening. Registration for Mutton Busting is at 5:30 p.m. Rodeo starts at 7 p.m.

On Aug. 28, an informational meeting was held at the Guthrie Center Activity Center, beginning at 6 p.m. A “standing room only” crowd, estimated at 200, was on hand to hear from various viewpoints.
Speakers included representatives from the Iowa Utilities Commission (IUC), Office of the Consumer Advocate, and Summit Carbon Solutions. Handouts from IUC included the standard process regarding hazardous liquid pipelines and eminent domain. | |

The Guthrie Center Fire Department applied for and received $25,000 from the Prairie Meadows Community Betterment Grant. The money will be used to upgrade the communication system within the fire department with new handheld radios and radios in the trucks.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) announced the hiring of Janelle Higgins as an assistant coach for the softball program. This is her first coaching position at the NCAA Division I level. Higgins is a graduate of Panorama High School and the daughter of Jean Higgins of Yale.
Higgins most recently served as head coach of softball at North Platte Community College.

Riley Gibson is the 2024 Guthrie County Fair Queen, and she will reign during this year’s fair, which runs Aug. 29 through Sept. 2. She will be on hand when the 2025 Queen is announced at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1 at the Little Amphitheater. The Queen announcement is traditionally one of the highlights of the fair.
Gibson is a 2024 graduate of Panorama High School and is enrolled at Iowa State University. She is the daughter of Jim and Karwyn Gibson.

This is a regular tradition for the Panthers, but the social media post on Facebook has gone viral, being played more than 1.4 million times nationwide with more than 4,700 shares — and those numbers keep growing, so much so that the school district turned off the comments as it was becoming too much to monitor. Results of Iowa’s 2024 pheasant population survey are in and the results were nearly identical to the 2022 and 2021.
The annual August roadside survey found Iowa’s statewide pheasant population to be 19 birds per 30-mile route, down from 23 birds per route in 2023. The decline was expected after much of Iowa received 3-7 inches of rainfall above normal during the nesting season.

On Aug. 28, a total of 13 players participated. Jane Barcus got a 16, Wayne Nickel got a 17, Robert Klever had a 16 and a 17, Rhonda Titus got two 16s, Sandy Rumelhart got a 16, and Jim Carico came up with a 24.
The Guthrie Center cribbage players generally meet at Guthrie Center Library on Mondays at 8 a.m., at the New Homestead independent living rec room at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and at the Guthrie Center Activity Center at 1 p.m. on Fridays. Organizers say there is always room for more, and they will be glad to teach you how to play. They play for quarters on Wednesday and Friday. | |

The Panthers are off to a 2-1 start for the season.
On Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Panorama volleyball team (1-0) got its season underway with a 3-1 win at home against West Central Valley (0-1). Panorama won the first set, 29-27, and West Central Valley won the second set, 25-19. Panorama took the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-21, on its way to the victory. Notable performances came from Nerea Gimeno Perez, who led the team in assists with 12.

The Panorama boys cross country team competed at the Southeast Valley meet at the Gowrie Municipal golf course on Thursday, Aug. 29 against 16 other schools. Noah Poldberg led the Panthers with a fourth-place finish in a time of 17:46.26. Also running were Zach Hayden, 66th place, 23:16.83; Jeremiah King; and Bennett Allen. The boys will run next on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Grant's Woods Park in a field of nine teams in a meet hosted by Madrid. | |

Panorama’s cross country girls got their legs under them in regular season competition for the first time at the Southeast Valley meet held at Gowrie Municipal Golf Course on Thursday. Aug. 29. Panorama finished fourth in the 17-school field with 103 points. Madrid placed first with 41, followed by St. Edmond, 74, and ACGC, 88. Kylie Rochholz finished in fourth with a time of 20:44.25. Laicey Lutz broke the top 10 with a time of 20:57.60 to capture eighth place. Rounding out the Panorama results: Almiranda Burnett, 31st, 24:53.36; Nella Rivas, 38th, 25:45.61; Maddy Lutz, 40th, 25:50.23; 60th, Corrie Knapp, 29:03.02; 74: Grace Tripple, 32:05.42; and Jolynne Roeder. The girls will run next on Thursday, Sept. 5 at Grant's Woods Park in a field of nine teams in a meet hosted by Madrid. | |

| | ACGC volleyball drops first game of the season to No. 13 Van Meter

ACGC volleyball (0-1) got its season underway on Tuesday, Aug. 27 against No. 13 Van Meter (2-1). The Chargers lost the away matchup, 3-0. Van Meter won the three sets 25-18, 25-23 and 25-15. Last season’s assist leader Shay Lemke picked up right where she left off. The senior had 16 of the team's 22 assists. Becca Littler had the second most with four. The same went for last season’s kill leader Stella Largent, who had 15 of the team's 22 kills, while also forcing 16 kill errors. Camdyn Richter was second behind Largent in both stats, with six kills and three kill errors. On defense, Ilana Baumert led the way with nine digs. Littler was just behind her with eight, Lemke with six and Largent with five. ACGC had five aces on the day, two coming from Richter and one apiece from Rylee Robson, Littler and Baumert. ACGC’s next game will be at home on Tuesday, Sept. 3 against Pleasantville (0-1). | |

The Charger boys cross country team came out on top against 16 other teams at the Southeast Valley meet held at the Gowrie Municipal Golf Course on Thursday, Aug. 29. ACGC led with 62 team points, followed by St. Edmond, 83; Fort Dodge, 114; Madrid, 130; and East Sac County, 140. Gavin Sloss, 5th place, 17:56.54, and Preston Kent, 7th place, 18:12.78, led ACGC. Tate Fever ran a time of 19:22.88 to finish 15th, with Noah Kading right behind him at 19:24.74 to place 16th. Also running were Brody Beeler, 34th, 21:01.40; Jonny Kading, 38th, 21:14.57; Jameson Pfrang, 22:20.87; Cameron Mozingo, 24:50.84; Tai Riordan, 25:14.60; Stetson Ellis, 27:27.28; and Ryne Noland, 30:24.73. Ted Ericson won flight 2 with Lyle Hansen placing second, Jason Wolf placing third and Jerry Landry placing fourth. Flight 3 was won by John Muenzenberger with Cliff Wendel second John Peters third and Phil Rivera fourth. Next week will be the final play for the year with a tournament and banquet. | |
