Many of the best ideas are borrowed

“If you keep on doing what you have always done, you will keep on getting what you have always got — or less.”

I heard that quote from a speaker at industry conference a few decades ago. I don’t recall who the speaker was, but his words certainly stuck with me and continue to drive me to this day.

Whether you run a business, work at a tax-funded institution, or volunteer at a nonprofit, you know the importance of growth. To experience growth, you usually have to try new things. Here are a few we have completed recently or are in the process of doing. And, as you will see, many of the best ideas are borrowed.

Panorama Girls Basketball Souvenir Edition

We published a souvenir edition of the Panorama girls basketball state finalist team recently, complete with large individual player photos by Betty Cooper, statistics on each player, and comments from Coach Boettcher, all in a full-color magazine. We presented these magazines at the awards banquet and provided copies for players, coaches and family members.

When I was in junior high school, 44 years ago, my hometown newspaper published a similar piece on our undefeated state championship wrestling program. It was a broadsheet publication with huge photos of each wrestler with statistics and coach’s comments. I modeled our effort after my best recollection of that, but we modernized it with full color in a magazine format and with a full digital edition. See the girls basketball digital edition here.

Veterans Salute

We are in the process of collecting photos of Guthrie County veterans for a special section we will publish in October that we hope to have packed with pictures. This will be modeled after the efforts of another Iowa company that has done this superbly. We have more than 50 photos already with many more to come. There is no cost to run the photo, and they can be submitted online at https://gctimesnews.com/veterans/ or you can stop by our office in Panora at 111 E. Main St., and we will scan them and return to you immediately.

Times Vedette delivered via text message

We have had great success in growing this Times Vedette email newsletter, surpassing the number of print subscribers we had previously in just a matter of months. We also realize that many Guthrie County residents are not frequent email users and would prefer a way to have this sent to them via text message on their phones. We are in the beta stage with this option and will be rolling out the details in weeks ahead, along with some other ideas we continue to develop — or borrow.

Have a fantastic Friday, and, as always, thank you for reading.

By Rich Wicks | Times Vedette

The three large yellow recycling receptacles on East Clay Street in Panora now have signage informing the public of a change in what is accepted. Beginning March 31, the only items accepted there will be cardboard and paper.

Jotham Arber, County Health Services Director, provided some background on the situation.

“As of the end of March, what we’re going to be doing is shifting what we collect in our large bins,” said Arber. “We’re still going to collect paper, and we’re still going to collect cardboard.”

Iowa’s spring turkey season is right around the corner

From the Iowa Department of Natural Resources

Coming off record harvests in 2020 and again in 2023, Iowa’s spring turkey hunters could be living in the “good ol’ days.” And with three straight years of good hatches across much of the state, roughly 35,000 hunters are ready to hit the woods.

“Two-year-old birds drive the population, do lots of the gobbling and tend to move more than the older toms, which is what hunters like,” said Jim Coffey, forest wildlife biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Hunters like to hear a lot of birds and not see other hunters.”

Review safe hunting practices ahead of spring turkey season

From the Iowa Department of Natural Resources

Roughly 35,000 camo-covered hunters in stealth mode will be heading to the timber in the next few weeks for Iowa’s spring turkey season. And, just as important as contacting the landowner, checking the shell supply and finding the decoys, part of every hunt prep is to review safe hunting practices.

“When I think about spring turkey hunting safety, I come back to the basic safety tips. Avoid wearing patriotic colors (red, white, blue) as those are the same colors found in a gobblers head. And don’t shoot at movement. Wait to take the shot until you’ve identified the beard on the turkey,” said Jamie Cook, hunter education coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

 'Drive-Away Dolls'

By Michael C. Woody | Times Vedette

Director/writer Joel Coen (of the Coen brothers) gives us a raunchy and profane story of two women on a road-trip in a car with a unique present in the trunk. The movie and the language never hold back, which produces a mixture of shock and “laugh-out-loud” moments. One of the craziest movies I’ve seen in a while, and it is sure to offend many. Grade: C

1953 Chevy holds memories for Flanery

Car has become the icon of her business.

By Rich Wicks | Panora Times

Some things naturally seem to go together, such as hot dogs and baseball or summer and the beach. But what about a hair salon and a classic car? Although this might not seem like a natural match, Kellie Flanery of Panora explained why this pairing works well for her.

“I grew up out at the lake, and my husband is from in town,” she said. “He and his brothers had a garage, and they were always hot-rodders. I never really liked cars all that well, but I started a hair salon and named it Retro LUX. Then I kind of started getting into doing pinup stuff, and it brought me a reason to like that old car stuff.”
